Last-minute preparations beckoned the Call of Duty: Warzone community into a mad-whirl sprint. The official COD account teased the community, “Last chance to get your special Black Ops 7 rewards in Warzone,” sending the whole COD community into a frenzy trying to figure out what they may have missed and if they only had hours remaining.
The tweet just says “Last chance!” with a butterfly emoji and a link, all the while the question remains about what exactly it is the ‘last chance’ is for and when it will expire. Classic Call of Duty confusion! The confusion perhaps was very much alive as the replies poured in with many asking for answers and condemning lack of transparency, while others lamented recent company decisions.
Players such as @DextersDesciple simply said, “Why tell us last chance but not tell us when it fucking ends??” Others, like @vn_pereiramarqz, accused Activision of bad marketing, stating, “Nobody knew about this event until now.” Talk about a full-on whining session if that is considered on account of how FOMO drives engagement in live service games.
According to reports in the reply section, the event is said to involve finding special red crates that emit either liquid or smoke and then collecting “butterflies” that appear nearby. The best player-to-player explanation came from @Jriley_AFC: “Play casual. There will be a normal box somewhere with like red liquid looking stuff pouring out…run into them to ‘catch butterflies.'” But that is player-to-player intel, and not word from the horse’s mouth.
Based on plenty of responses stating that the Battlefield 6 beta just ended, the timing of this last-minute Warzone push appears to be pretty bad. @OgHazeKiller562 left it with a blunt remark: “Everybody is gonna go back now because battlefield 6 beta is over.” Oof-an extremely brutal comment on the competition between these two FPS giants.
On the other hand, the dedicated crowd has already bagged all of the loot- @BlackopsMan115 proudly claimed, “I already got everything,” while others are just now finding out about it. @caps_fan74 gave the greatest commentary ever: “Aw man. There isn’t anything for grinding 500 butterflies? What the heck have I’ve been doing all weekend.” The pain of going by limited-time events in a nutshell.
The rewards are still unknown, indicative except by the butterfly emoji to possibly be some sort of cosmetic. Given this promotion is for Black Ops 7 (which they have not even announced yet), it is probably getting a little teaser content for the next CoD title. Classic Activision move, subtle teasers to capture attention prior to any real announcement.
Split, by the way, the community stands when it comes to Warzone-related action. @KinG12035672 demands, “Focus on Mp again.” The conversation about the exclusive Warzone items has been reignited; @MasonZikman wonders aloud, “Maybe don’t have Warzone exclusive items?”–a commonly heard complaint within competitive multiplayer circles.
Just like most Call of Duty news these days, this announcement raised more questions than it answered. When the hell does this event actually end? What even are the rewards? Why bear such urgency? Typically, it appears that in one of its shifts towards answering, Activision was purposely vague about the entire matter, thereby forcing players to go out and find whatever scraps of news they can grasp. One thing is crystal clear: The CoD community is living in the present and somehow remains miffed at anything cryptic because that is all they have to go on for their next clue as to what is coming next for the franchise.
For now, Warzone players better jump in real quick for those Black Ops 7 rewards. Knowing Activision, they probably won’t say a word about the end until it has already been done. Such is life with live-service FPS titles—wake up or miss out.
