As expected, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 has once again presented the same thing, the grinding, the unappealing long process of tediousness, and finally, the camo reward which symbolizes that the game is a complete holdout victory for the player. The camo has been rightly given the name Nexus Horizon, and according to the recent news, it is the Global Mastery Camo. This implies that players must first acquire all 16—yes, sixteen—of the other Mastery Camos! Every one of them.
In case someone is unaware, a Global Mastery Camo is the ultimate skin that you can receive. It is not just about one gun being gold or even a few guns being diamond; it is the beginning of grinding through every mode, in every weapon category, probably even playing all zombie maps and doing missions in spec ops. It is like a digital purple heart but for killing virtual characters. And Black Ops 7 has this in the form of Nexus Horizon.
What was the online reaction? A marvelous and chaotic mess just like in the past. The players are already some of them very happy. A player with the handle YourOperator has just said “i love it.” and this sums it up. On the other hand, besides, user JoAl51387 was not very impressed and said “Thia camo ugly af ngl. They could’ve made it better tbh.” Ouch! That was a direct hit. A third user, bobbyBigfingers, was expressing his existential dread by dropping a truth bomb: “It honestly don’t matter all this grinding just for it all to be gone in a year.” He is absolutely right. The annual cycle giveth and the annual cycle taketh away.
Mainly, as is usually the case with Call of Duty, the main drama is in the comments of the replies. The classic argument of who has time for this keeps coming back. TWhizzy92 did not let the opportunity to engage in the debate slip by saying, “People don’t have time to play for 24/7 non stop 🤣,” after someone suggested the grind was for the serious. KronicUndead responded with lots of energy, telling another user “Your inability to grasp a simple concept is going to make your life rough.” It became personal! It always goes that way.
And then there is the whole question of what is a Mastery Camo? Actually, there was a mini-debate. Incredilag was trying to argue that “”Those aren’t mastery camos though? There’s only 1 mastery camo per mode lol,” this was countered by BFlesher5 stating, “Gold is a mastery camo, as is diamond, as is dark matter.” So, does that mean that the path to the mastery camos is also made of camos? Ouch, my head hurts. The community cannot even agree on one terminology but still, they will be grinding for it.
The insane requirement of having to unlock 16 camos before you even SEE Nexus Horizon is totally out of this world. It’s a commitment. Krisplyy reflected modern times with “I almost feel like there are too many camos nowadays.” It’s a fact. The menus are probably full of shiny patterns. And DypDrp made a sarcastic remark that the whole flashy thing reminded him of “Roblox shooters with these skins 💀💀.” Harsh but maybe a little bit true? The more it gets the more it feels like a different universe that’s far away from the old, gritty Modern Warfare days.
The fun part is when talking about what actually comes along with it. MoisesKBM raised the important questions: “@charlieINTEL @gork what does this benefit for the player in the game and in real life?” Gork gave the most fantastic cynical response: “In-game: jack shit besides flexing on sweats who know what it takes… nah, jk you’ll just be even more undateable lmao.” And there it is. The real reward: bragging rights and a couch beside you that is permanently empty. Worth it?
NanoGolfo tagged it the “Unemployment final boss,” which might be the most fitting description of any endgame content ever made. And guess what? He is speaking the truth. To acquire that, you would need a gamer or a content creator’s schedule which, as KronicUndead just pointed out to someone, is actually a job for some. “Some people do, it’s their job,” he said. So, for them, this is not a grind; it is just Tuesday. But for us others who have responsibilities? It is a distant dream. The visual of the camo itself, Nexus Horizon, is a contentious topic among the players. Some think it is fire, while others think it is just no good.
