And so, one after another, Bungie dropped the new Hunter Exotic, Moirai: The Edge of Fate, with a… not-quite-entirely-united-in-excitement community. With a cryptic description said to be “Throw. Bounce. Retrieve. Throw. Bounce. Repeat,” this exotic has split the community into two halves: one in hype, one in frustration. Some are enjoying the new gameplay loop, while others are calling it a recycled mess. And the replies are more violent than the Crucible.

How about the exotic? It really seems Throw-ing, something Hunters are already well used to doing. But here’s the twist, it has a melee stat prerequisite to it, which elicited the heavy rolling of eyes from many. In fact, Ibrahim, a Hunter main, begged Bungie on Twitter to remove the 70 melee stat requirement, “Stats wasted from more important things,” he wrote. Ouch.

Next are the comparisons with Destiny 2 Yoroi armor. RipperCR said that the armor design in the teaser looked suspiciously similar to those samurai-inspired sets from Destiny 2. The video format was side-eyed even for looking like Infinite’s promo, coincidence? Or is Bungie learning something from their former pals over at 343? At least, the similarity is jarring.

Well, this is only just the start of the paywall drama. Phantom49635033 (alias Scarfbit) tagged Moirai “a banger exotic tied behind the worst paywall.” And the worst part? They’re not alone in that claim. The player base is seriously tired of best gear feeling like something that can only be acquired through expansions or seasonal passes. It’s an ongoing complaint, and this exotic just doubled down on it.

Oh, and the gameplay loop! Blake Alan, one of the Guardians, and clearly not the biggest Moirai fan, blasted Bungie on Twitter, “Has anyone at Bungie actually playtested Moirai?” His gripes: “‘Grapple does essentially the same thing but with an added melee’; But biggest is if you throw your spike to create a tangle you no longer have your spike anymore. It’s like giving somebody a gun but taking away the bullets from it; definitely not a power fantasy.”

Well, many of these are attached, of course, to the bigger complaints about Destiny 2’s current state. About the power grind, Sean Bowen called it “super bad,” specifically referring to the upcoming reset in ‘Ash and Iron.’ Other voices are calling out for Destiny 3 for a new engine, including Allex: “Wake up, fucking Bungie!” So harsh, but I mean, this community sure knows how to stir the passion.

Not everyone is leaning towards a deep depression; FamiliarPassion commented on how much they’re enjoying the flexible system. “I got a little over 5 months to reach t5 loot,” they shrugged, grinding be damned. Then there are folks like SHOCKILLA, who only really want to see their Hunter cloak fixed.

So, what’s the verdict? Moirai is… divisive. Some see promise in its mechanics, while others are certain it’s just a few dozen more Bungie misses, and with paywalls and grinding fatigue casting a pall all around, that sparkle will never land.

But hey, it’s Destiny. Players will always find something to complain about, grind through all of it, and then scoop back up at the next update. Because, at the end of the day, there really are no games quite like this.
