On Tuesday, Nintendo showed the first teaser trailer for the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which left everyone asking one major question: will Zelda be a playable character in the game?
Longtime producer for the series, Eiji Aonuma, already knows the answer to that question. However, when asked about it, he simply responded by telling Kotaku’s Jason Schreier “I can’t tell you.”
Just in case you missed Nintendo’s first teaser trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, then you can check it out in the video below.
The Breath of the Wild 2 producer also said that, since the teaser trailer dropped, the question he’s been asked the most is if Zelda will be a playable character. So, it’s quite clear that Nintendo is aware that fans of the series are somewhat expecting that Zelda will end up being a playable character in the game’s highly-anticipated sequel.
On top of being asked about Zelda potentially being a playable character, Aonuma was asked by Kotaku if there will be more than one playable character in the sequel, and he gave the same answer as before by once again saying “I can’t tell you.”
Unfortunately, Nintendo didn’t announce a release date for the franchise’s next installment, nor did they announce if it’ll be coming out within the next year or two.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released back on March 3, 2017, and it instantly became an all-time classic game. Its sequel is likely still in the early stages of development, so we might not get a release date for it until next year’s E3.
It’s worth noting that Nintendo teased the first Breath of the Wild back in 2013, and it took them four years to release it. Obviously, fans of the series are hoping that the sequel will come out a lot sooner than four years from now.
As many would expect, Breath of the Wild 2 will be a direct follow-up to the game’s first installment, which is why many are wondering if Zelda will be a playable character for the first time ever. At the end of the first game, the legendary character was finally freed, thus making it possible for her to become the game’s lead protagonist.
But for now, fans shouldn’t expect to see anything more regarding the sequel until some time next year, which is hopefully when Nintendo will announce its release date.
