Award shows are a thing that exists, and that’s the most that can really be said about them. When the person you’re pulling for loses, it’s because they’re rigged and the whole thing was decided from the start due to some behind-the-scenes politics, as well as a likely exchange of currency. When the person you’re pulling for wins, though, that’s all quality.
Love them or hate them, award shows are likely to remain a thing that exists for the foreseeable future. The BAFTAs – British Academy of Film and Television Arts – are among the most prestigious of these. Recently, the British Academy Games Awards announced their top six nominees for the category of Performer in a Leading Role.
The first on the list is Laura Bailey for her role as Kait Diaz in Gears 5. Fans may also recognize her name from dozens of other roles, such as Jaina Proudmoore in the Warcraft universe, as well as her considerable fame as a member of the cast of Critical Role.
Second comes Courtney Hope for her role as Jesse Faden in Control. Also known for Beth Wilder in Quantum Break, Hope has a variety of different roles under her belt, including stints in film and television outside of gaming.
Third, we have Logan Marshall-Green for his role as David Smith. Marshall-Green has received significant recognition for this role before now, including nominations for New York Game Award and NAVGTR Award, as well as winning the Golden Joystick Award.
Gonzalo Martin takes the fourth spot for his role as Sean Diaz in Life is Strange 2. Gonzalo’s nomination isn’t quite surprising given how well he did, but seeing as it was the actor’s first voice acting job, it’s great to see him claiming the recognition he deserves.
Barry Sloane takes the fifth spot in recognition of his role as Captain Price in the latest Modern Warfare. Sloane took over the role that was previously taken by Billy Murray and David Kinsman, and has knocked it out of the park since with an extremely recognizable performance that didn’t drastically deviate from the previous performances.
Finally, we have none other than Norman Reedus for his role in Death Stranding as Sam Porter Bridges. This is Reedus’s second nomination after being nominated for Best Performance for the same role at The Game Awards 2019.
The competition is certainly stiff, so it’s anyone’s guess who’s going to be taking the award this time around. If it was your call, who would you award the BAFTA to?
