The Official Assassin’s Creed Twitter account put out a very enticing hint for what could be yet another Assassin’s Creed Shadows DLC, and fans are now going mad trying to speculate who the new character might be. – A shadow image was posted with the caption “Who is this person? Wrong answers only,” followed by a pertinent statement that few days of Claws of Awaji shall put the whole Assassin’s Creed community to look on each other for truth down. Yes, the excitement is real.
Well, it’s nothing much to look at, to be honest. A silhouette of someone elderly and what seems to be some sort of tool or weapon in that person’s hands. Perhaps a sickle?- The whole internet was investigating with much zeal, but in the spirit of the Twitter post of “wrong answers only,” the replies were an absolute treasure trove of dreadful attempts, obnoxious AC-centric inside jokes that only the hardest core Pachyderm fans could hope to understand.
One person said, “Desmond’s mother’s great grandmother,” well, that’s a deep cut right there. Another one said, “Your Mom when she calls you but you don’t respond” – honestly, I can relate! Regardless, the community is having a great time with the tease, throwing everything from “Markos from Odyssey trying to benefit in Japan” to “Jacob Frye” and “Altaïr ibn’La ahad” because why not throw in the original assassin too?
Well, here’s the kicker – somewhere amidst all this laughter are real questions posed by the community. Somebody said, “Are we getting a sickle weapon too?” You’ve got to admit that it doesn’t, for once, sound like a bad guess seeing the silhouette. If anything, the shape does resemble an agricultural tool or a curved blade-the pretty good one, for feudal Japan is the setting.
Other comments question if this DLC is basic free with one seeking, “I thought the dlc was going to be free”-perhaps this indicates some form of mixed messaging or just players assumed it would be free content. Ubisoft has never really set the record straight on that one, so we’ll have to wait and see.
The funnies, however, have to be, “That’s my cat Mittens, no kidding,” or “Heathcliffe, that famous orange cat that isn’t Garfield.”I can’t wait for the AC community to come up with complete bullshit back and forth alongside proper lore discussions.
What really boggles my mind is that some players are tying this into the story of the base game. One player jokingly said, “That explains why Naoe has nothing on the shelves anymore,” which is a pretty clever reference to the game’s mechanics. Another asked if it’s Naoe’s mom Tsuyu, which is actually not a bad theory. The character does look older, and family ties mean a crap ton in Assassin’s Creed annals.
There are rumors that this could be a teaser for upcoming game content, with one commenting that it is “The protagonist of AC Hexe!!!” – which would be somewhat ridiculous if they’re already teasing the next mainline game with Shadows DLC. Probably not, but hey, all bets are off in AC world.
Perfect timing on this teaser-the DLC all drops in two days, and Ubisoft has set off much excitement through the whole thing. Half the replies made no sense, only incentivizing the community to join in and get involved. The real beauty in these “wrong answers only” types of prompts are how they start fueling creative humor alongside building anticipation for the real reveal.
In an interesting twist, the more engaging thing to come out of this one is how much investment people have put into this mystery character. Like, there is not one thing known about them! Age, gender, role in the story, nothing. Just silhouetted, and the promise that we’re going to find out soon. But that hasn’t stopped certain storytellers and theorists from creating whole ecosystems of backstory and theories on next to no evidence. The AC fan base has got to be one of the most creative and engaged communities ever.
We are counting down the hours to Claws of Awaji because one thing is for sure: Ubisoft knows how to get hyped up. Whether the mysterious character becomes a big story figure, one of their new friends, or just a cool vendor with cool gear, the community will rally to find everything new. Responses have proven that players are massively invested in the Shadows world and are hungry for more stories in feudal Japan.
Genuine curiosity layered with utter nonsense is the best narrative ever built by gaming communities: serious dissection laced with complete memery that holds our attention. A two-day wait for figuring out who this mystery person really is will do just fine… And wonder if any of these crazy guesses weren’t too far off from the truth.
