When Crash Team Racing was released back on June 21, fans of the classic kart racer were able to breathe a sigh of relief, as the game was completely free of microtransactions. However, that is about to change, as players will soon be able to spend their real-life money to purchase in-game items.
Of course, most of the player-base expected this to happen, as the in-game currency system requires players to grind for quite a while before they’re able to afford new items. So, in an attempt to give players a chance to circumvent this, Activision announced that starting in August, everyone will be able to fast-track their Wumpa Coin collection via bundles in the in-game store.
You can check out Activision’s official announcement below.
“There will also now be a way for players to fast-track their Wumpa Coin collection if they like. Starting in early August, players will have the option to purchase Wumpa Coin bundles from their game console stores to supplement the Coins they earn by playing.”
In addition to announcing a microtransaction system, Activision also confirmed that the Crash Team Racing Grand Prix event will return in August, and it’ll kick off on August 2.
In the CTR Grand Prix, players compete for new skins, karts, stickers, and more. On top of that, the top-ranking players at the end of the event will be given a unique kart.
Since it has been released, Crash Team Racing has been one of the top-selling games across all platforms both in the United States and internationally. So, it’s pretty safe to say that its comeback has been a gigantic success so far. But, adding microtransactions to the game might drive some players off, even though all of the items that’ll be able to be purchased will be purely cosmetic.
Even though Activision is adding microtransactions to the game, all of Crash Team Racing’s future updates will be completely free. As for what will be added to the game in the future, well, a little bit of everything, as new characters, karts, skins, stickers, and tracks will be added to CTR at some point.
Before it was released, Activision never confirmed or denied that microtransactions would be featured in the Crash Team Racing remake. But, everyone predicted that they’d end up in the game, even if they weren’t a part of it upon release, and, well, they’re finally here. As for how much the bundles will cost, well, that hasn’t been announced yet.
