While A Way Out developer Josef Fares enjoyed Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 and Santa Monic Studios’ God of War, he also felt like both games were a bit too long and repetitive, adding that he likes shorter experiences like Marvel’s Spider-Man.

During a recent interview with Games Beat, Fares expressed his feelings on 2018’s game of the year contenders and responded to the fact that God of War took home more awards than Red Dead Redemption 2. In his response, he said that the aforementioned Marvel’s Spider-Man was his personal game of the year, citing its length as a big reason why he prefers it over the other two major titles.

“When Rockstar did Red Dead 2, it’s a great game in many ways. A bit too long if you ask me, a bit too repetitive in the mission design,” said Fares during his chat with Games Beat. “You’d go out and shoot something and go back. I think that’s one of the reasons why God of War won.”

While speaking about his personal preference, A Way Out’s creator said that he doesn’t like games with repetitive missions and mechanics and that both Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War featured both of those things. He also questioned why certain games have to be as long as they are, as he believes that most people simply just don’t have the amount of free time available that it takes to finish a game like Red Dead 2.

But, despite the fact that, in his opinion, God of War was too long and repetitive, Fares also praised director Corey Barlog for taking some “pretty cool risks” with the well-known franchise, adding that it was quite “cocky” and “risky” for Santa Monica Studios to do what they did with the game. But, their direction ultimately paid off in the end, as the game was an overwhelming success.

A Way Out, which is a two-player split-screen experience, will take anywhere from 6 to 8 hours to complete. So, Fares certainly practices what he preaches when it comes to the length of a game.

To compare, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 will take players roughly 60 hours to complete, and Santa Monica Studios’ God of War will take between 17 and 25 hours before the conclusion of the story is revealed.

While both games are pretty lengthy, there really haven’t been any complaints regarding how long it takes to play through them, as both were highly-praised after they were released.
