Binding of Isaac is one of the most influential indie games of the decade. It transformed its own genre and gave rise to several other titles that drew inspiration from its mechanics. Nine years after its release, there is one last expansion on its way.

Described on the Steam page as being “as big as an upgrade to the game as Rebirth was to the original Flash game”, Binding of Isaac: Repentance is one big boy DLC.

The game is about 90% done. It’s set for release on the 31st December 2020, although this date isn’t set in stone. Although the game isn’t finished yet, the devs think an end of year release is very doable.

This is a very fitting date as it matches the day that support will end for Adobe Flash, the platform that the original Binding of Isaac was built on all those years ago.

This DLC is basically the sequel that Binding of Isaac always deserved but never received.

It’s been a while since Binding of Isaac was last updated – according to the official wiki, the last patch happened way back in 2018. The last update was Afterbirth+ in 2017. Many thought the game was finished and returned to it every now and then for a dose of Isaac.

The previous updates, Rebirth, Afterbirth, and Afterbirth+ were significant updates to the game, but the lead dev promises that Repentance is the “final, final, final mega expansion” with loads more content.

Further updates will be shared via Steam as part of an ongoing dev blog, just like the devs ran for the previous updates. This will give more info on what’s to be expected in this last update for Binding of Isaac.

You can already wishlist the game on Steam and this is recommended if you want to keep track of what’s coming. The posts should start sometime around mid-October and then carry on for the rest of the year.

There’s no info on what’s expected for a console release of Binding of Isaac: Repentance, although the devs at Nicalis have always been pretty good at keeping their community updated.

So that’s the news – Binding of Isaac is getting one last huge sequel-like DLC to celebrate the game’s 9th anniversary. It’s called Repentance and should be out later this year.
