Earlier this year, there was a rumor going around which suggested that Sony was unhappy with Death Standing’s sales, and on top of that, the game’s user reviews were quite mixed after the game’s release, as it’s possibly Hideo Kojima’s most polarizing game.
However, despite the aforementioned rumor regarding Sony being disappointed in the game’s sales, and despite its mixed reviews, the game, according to Kojima, ended up being a success financially.
“We surpassed the amount we needed to make a profit, so I think it sold well enough to be called a success, recoupment of development costs included,” said Kojima during a recent interview with Livedoor News. “We’ll release the PC version soon and have already secured enough profit to prepare for what’s next, so there’s no need to worry.”
Also during the interview, Kojima was asked about what’s next for him, and while he did say that there’s something in the works, he kept the details pretty close to the vest. He did say that there was a project at Kojima Productions that was recently canceled, but he didn’t reveal any of that project’s details either.

Regardless of what’s next for Kojima, we do know that it won’t be another entry into the Metal Gear Solid series, which came to a lackluster end back in 2015. Since then, fans have been wanting another game in the series, particularly either a remake of the first Metal Gear Solid from 1998 or a remake of the first two Metal Gear games from the late 80s.
Unless Kojima was being dishonest in the interview, it appears that, even if the Metal Gear Solid series continues either via a brand new game or a remake, he won’t be involved.
Recently, there was a rumor suggesting that Sony was looking to acquire several IPs from Konami, one of which was Metal Gear Solid. Also, the anonymous report said that, after Sony acquires MGS from Konami, they’ll have Kojima develop the franchise’s next installment.
Naturally, Kojima was asked about this, and he gave the following response while laughing: “Ah, that’s completely false. I haven’t heard anything about it at least.”
Before Sony’s recent PlayStation 5 reveal live stream, some were thinking that Metal Gear Solid VI was going to be revealed for the PS5 during the stream. But, as of right now, it looks like there’s not going to be another MGS game in the immediate future.
