With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare recently has the 2v2 Gunfight as one of the game’s most used models, it seems they’d be prepping for a new 3v3 and 1v1 mode. This was confirmed by Joe Cecot, Co-Design Director of Multiplayer at Infinity Ward on Twitter when he said, the team would eventually integrate up to 2 modes that are the 3v3 and 1v1 variants of Gunfight to the game shortly.
The reason is that the Gunfight model has been getting a lot of attention from the Modern Warfare community recently, and also the competitive tournament that has charms, unique calling cards, and blueprints as rewards that launched last week. However, before the launch of Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward did state that the mode would support both 3v3 and 1v1—as revealed above—in private matches.

There was even a joke cracked by one developer; he said the team has a 1v1 Gunfight to settle internal debates. On that note, 1v1 Gunfight is currently enabled in Modern Warfare secluded matches; however, 3v3 is not available.
But looking back, Call of Duty games have featured the 3v3 and 1v1 mode. Cage matches, one of the modes in the original Modern Warfare, had mercy on one player against the other, even with multiplier maps like Vacant and Crash.
Also, there was a game mode similar, known as Face-Off, which brought about Modern Warfare two as a DLC. Face-Off had support for 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 matches on smaller maps that were for the mode. Therefore, if Gunfight manages to expand to include 1v1 and 3v3 modes, it would be nice to see some fan-favorite maps like Getaway, which returns in Modern Warfare.
Already Modern Warfare is set to commence next week, with a few notable Gunfight things added currently. Also, the Gunfight OSP will finally be making its way into the full game after being played in the alpha mode of the game, along with three new maps.
Nevertheless, the promotional picture for the first season teases additional Gunfight modes that still aren’t known yet. The tease may likely be for one or two maps, so not 1v1 or 3v3 should be expected for any Gunfight soon. However, there are many possibilities that Infinity Ward would add this least expectedly somewhat like the Gunfight tournament, but still don’t get too excited yet. So there’s a ton of content coming this week to carry people over.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4.
