It’s been a relatively quiet year for Sony, as the company not only canceled last December’s PlayStation Experience event, but they also skipped out on this past June’s E3 event, claiming that they’re trying to find new ways to engage with their fans in 2019. Of course, they haven’t yet described what that means, but one would assume that they’re going to rely more on the State of Play live streams to announce future projects.
But, according to Switched On Gamer, who got this information via a Twitter user by the name of GraviKnight, Sony will hold a keynote conference at Gamescom 2019. However, the leak didn’t give a specific date, as it only detailed the publishers and studios that will be a part of this year’s event.
If the leak does end up being true, it’ll be Sony’s first public conference since last year’s E3, where they finally showed gameplay from The Last of Us Part II. Naturally, if they do end up doing a keynote at this year’s Gamescom, fans will probably expect to see a follow-up trailer for the aforementioned sequel to Naughty Dog’s 2013 release, where the developer will finally reveal the game’s release date.
As of this writing, it’s being heavily rumored that The Last of Us Part II will be released this coming February, and upon release, it’ll have four different editions.
As previously mentioned, it’s been over a year since Sony last held a public conference, one would assume that the longtime gaming giant will have plenty to show off at Gamescom 2019 aside from The Last of Us Part II, as fans are eagerly waiting to hear more regarding Sucker Punch Productions’ next project called Ghost of Tsushima, which still doesn’t have a release date attached to it.
Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima was revealed during last year’s Sony conference at E3, and while the developers did decide to include some gameplay in its first trailer, they haven’t shown anything related to the game since.
It’s highly unlikely that Sony will reveal the release dates for Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II at this year’s Gamescom, as it’ll probably either be one or the other. Given the fact that the latter of the two aforementioned games is, by far, the more popular title, it’s possible that Sony could be saving the release date trailer for either The Game Awards on December 6 or for their PlayStation Experience event, which typically takes place in mid-December.
