The discussions have gone wild and taken over all social media. Leading the discussions and the speculations about the rise of PC gaming over consoles, were the gamers who were very quick to start the conversations. Thus, a record-breaking day for Steam, again. I mean, honestly, do they even stop doing that? It looks like in a few months we are going to see a new record of how many simultaneous users Steam had logged in when someone would say that the platform is experiencing a rise and that it has become the best digital store for PC gaming. The count this time exceeded 42 million. 42 MILLION. It’s not the total accounts figure but rather the number of people who are currently online. Just stop for a moment and consider it, it is quite insane.
And the comments, oh the comments are so funny and clever.
You can see people who totally celebrate it as a good thing. For example, GamehagEN wrote, “Me and my 41,816,051 friends,” and it is such a great and smart way of putting it. AymericHLX went back to the “PC Master Race” slogan. TheYangiire and thereal_chunga through their memes just about ridiculed Steam: It is nothing and still wins. And who knows, they might be right? Valve really just… is, does sales and takes the money. It’s a definite vibe.
However, the spicy discussions are the main course of any good gaming Twitter thread. User ZoieNolan4 raised the big issue: “Do you think PC gaming will decline this year and next year due to the massively increased price of PC components?” Ouch. That’s a very painful question for anyone building a PC. It is indeed a concern! RAM and GPU prices have been bad. Zoie even went back to the original post doubling down saying “2025 was the last year of growth of PC gaming for a long time.”
They did not just go for it, it was like they poked a hornet’s nest with a “PC gaming is dead” stick. JasonKieffer1 came back very boldly and mentioned Steam Machine and Steam Frame (I assume he means the rumored Steam “Cube” or maybe just the form factor of Steam Deck?) which made PC gaming more reachable than ever. ZackWilkerson5 suggested that if console prices go up, then people will just skip to a PC anyway. Chief77_ replied “With the Steam machine and steam frame, no.” These guys have very strong belief in Valve’s hardware!
What was I talking about now? Oh, yes, the debate again. It is more than just prices. The age-old console vs. PC fight is still there. retr0gamer42 described himself and others as “console refugees.” Majewra said: “Anyone who is not planning on switching to PC is a fool.” And then, there are those who say basedtweetsonly (whose tweet seems to have been deleted from the context) apparently claimed PlayStation has more players, which JasonKieffer1 countered, stating that Steam has more than PlayStation, Nintendo and Xbox combined. That is a hard to believe figure if it’s really the case, but it’s talking about total users, not concurrent ones. Yet still, what they meant is: Steam is gigantic.
Some of the replies are just… insane and fun. LenaDeFarell called it “Big news for the unemployed.” That is a harsh comment but somewhat true for all of us with huge backlogs. Vanguard0x made a very philosophical statement that could be interpreted as, “Films and series are not good, the world is a mess and no one wants to go out… the only option left is to explore the backlog.” I can really identify with that. This is the vibe. We all have been through it; looking at the library and experiencing analysis paralysis.
Of course, there will be some subtle jibes about the competition in a Steam thread. outlawdabber just expressed his disbelief and disdain about the idea of playing games on Epic Games. The monopoly topic came up with just2red, others were quick to come to Valve’s defense stating that ZeroThirster giving the best service is not a monopoly, they are just the best. Melon_Chan_45 also pointed out that on PC you don’t have to pay for online playing, which is a powerful and decisive point in support of the platform.
On the other hand, the strange and obscure comments. For instance, Madaracore1 spoke of “cs2 groups with 29 pages of bots playing daily rewards,” implying that these user numbers are perhaps overstated. HiperOneis_Back posed the question “Quien para un left” which literally translates to “Who is up for a left?” Maybe a Left 4 Dead session? Who knows. The Twitter world can be a really bizarre place.
