If you have been sneaking in the news from your social media feed, there is no way you won’t know the little green character that has been shown all over the place. The cutting edge of Fortnite is or it’s not, it all depends on whoever perceives it, a puny tree sprinting around and blasting people in the face. The big scoop that the anonymous user ShiinaBR who usually spills the beans has is that the Baby Groot sidekick is scheduled to be released this weekend. This is certainly a very near date. It is even possible that by the time you finish this reading, it might even be in the shop. It is most probable that it won’t be, but you get the excitement.
What’s happening? For those who might not be acquainted with the intense saga of Fortnite, can we even say that Fortnite has a saga? Well, anyway, sidekicks are small partners who will be at your side. They won’t help you in the game and might even make you less lonely if some other player happens to kill your character, however, they will look cool. But, wait, this one is Baby Groot. From Guardians of the Galaxy. The one who shakes his head and git and git. That’s a fantastic deal.
As it usually happens, the internet was filled with happy player reactions plus demands for more items. Ayomide, a gamer from Solana, put it succinctly: ‘Baby Groot as a sidekick?? Yeah, that’s an instant cop 🔥🌱’. That’s exactly how it is. An instant purchase with no questions allowed. However, naturally, the questions came up.
One of the major concerns and perhaps a little dispute is an old cosmetic item. Once upon a time, a Baby Groot backbling was not a thing in the game. It was a tiny potted plant version. Not surprisingly, players like murdasouls and isaotintheshop are raising the question, ‘free for the ones who already purchased the backbling?’ or ‘If we have the backbling should we get the sidekick too?’. It’s a good question! Why would one want to purchase the same character a second time? Nevertheless, another user, the|Nerd|Saga, reminded everyone that the new sidekick is different. This is Baby Groot ‘when he is too big for the pot and can run on his own’. So in a sense, it is a new item. Which more likely means… you will have to pay. Epic Games is not known for giving out free stuff easily, especially not for a crossover item that is hyped.
And where there is a hype around crossovers, there are also more skins requests coming in immediately. FindingEmo_1953 wants to know if a new Guardians of the Galaxy skin, for example, Star-Lord would release along with him. Halcyon_SM even more specifically: ‘Only buying it if it drops with an mcu star lord so we can have star lord that doesn’t look like shit’. Oof. Harsh but true? The current Star-Lord skin in the game is based on the comic version, not the one in the MCU that everybody remembers and loves. So that is yet another thing. Players want the movie skins and they want them right away.
But it was not just about Groot at all times. The replies to this tweet are a wild snapshot of what Fortnite players might be thinking about all the time. Someone like BlackAdamShop is just relentless in asking about the Black Adam skin. Another, GreatWhite85, is demanding the demon from Jeepers Creepers. Chipmaster69 posted a pic of other rumored sidekicks like a little Pikachu-looking thing, asking ‘When are THESE Sidekicks coming?’. The wishlist is never done, and Epic has trained everyone to expect everything, all the time.
But the buzz is real, anyway. RIXMETAX just said ‘Weekend just got cuter’, and this is the mood. Even with the wallet stress; emily gets a pat on the back for saying ‘oh my god they need to stop my wallet can’t take this’—people are all set. TheAndrometa expressed it with a gif and ‘It’s about time!’.
There is also a bit of a meta-commentary happening. User eLbiChaN_2 posted a hashtag: #nosidekickrestrictions!. This is in reference to the ongoing issue in the community regarding not being able to use certain backblings or pets with specific skins. Players want full freedom to mix and match, and a new sidekick just re-emphasizes that desire.
So, what’s the conclusion? Fortnite is going to drop a super popular Marvel sidekick this weekend. V-Bucks will be required. The chances are that it wouldn’t be free for folks who already have the old backbling. And there will be a lot of players logging in from their PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
