Marvel Rivals is dropping clues about a massive surprise, and the official Twitter account posted: “Tomorrow, the plot is going to be the main thing and we want you to accompany us in this special day!!” along with the hashtag #Marvel Rivals. The hint has caused a ton of speculation in the community about the direction of the superhero group-based shooter going forward.
So what is going to be so great tomorrow? The developers are quite unclear, but the “story” aspect certainly suggests that there could be a lot of narrative content coming our way or even a new cinematic trailer. Marvel Rivals has been continuously broadening its universe from the get-go, so probably the players who are already a part of the game’s cosmos will witness a prominent event.
It’s difficult to categorize the community’s reaction as simply one thing. Some players, like Syyrax, are super excited and the comment he posted is “I disagree, the hype for me is still really high and this tease is really cute and interesting. Really excited for tomorrow!” Others, like harristic_ feel, “They definitely have been very extreme now. a week earlier informing is way too early as it kills the hype, but also very small hype period is not good.” Thus, there are indeed mixed feelings all over the place.
The main current speculation is about the characters Rogue and Gambit. This is backed up by several comments that imply some kind of wedding situation. AyQoN_01, a little dramatic, asked: “ROGUE AND GAMBIT ARE GETTING MARRIED? OMGGGGG,” just while Pretty_Elfboy was mulling over “Rogue wedding skin…,” and if “every mutant better get a skin this season.” Additionally, Leleu said, “THEYRE MARRYING ALR?? Omgg,” so the marriage theory is definitely getting stronger day by day.
Meanwhile, new speculation is also forming. ADeadDuck has noticed something in the background that piqued his curiosity and posted, “Are there three chess pieces on the left background?” which could indicate a new game mode or a tactical element. Trickstervk18 is of the opinion that “The Collector’s behind this,” an indication of the cosmic villain’s role in the story development.
Despite the buzz surrounding the tease, the timing has also made the situation controversial. Cereal_0229 said, “There teasing a trailer they better both be day drops there hyping tf outa this,” which perfectly captures the new content impatience felt by many. Cereal’s comment reflects exactly the impatience that many feel after the wait for new content. On the other, ryguythetallfry was very harsh and said, “Game officially lost me with the lack of communication and marketing for the new season; it’s a clear sign they are prioritizing others’ tasks; this game is on the way out,” which definitely hurt, and it’s been quite a harsh judgment.
While some players have already started thinking about the practical implications of it, ErsintheNorth guessed, “I bet her wedding skin will be in the season pass,” while Pretty_Elfboy was replying to another comment, “She wishes, perhaps another free mini-pass skin,” suggesting that the whole community is already considering the impact of this on the game’s cosmetic and battle pass system.
The hype around Marvel Rivals has been a rollercoaster and entertaining to follow. To some players, the developers are either over-communicating by revealing things prematurely or creating hype for a very short period thus creating a strange pacing issue that eventually either over-hypes people or makes them completely disengaged. Camandrios even went as far as to label the “dev team full of slow people,” which, wow, no limits there to the critique!
One thing that is really fascinating is the huge division within the community right now. It’s like a scenario in which while some players such as Syyrax are still excited and all-in, others view the game as slowly losing its strength. Such divergent reactions are not uncommon in live service games, but they do reflect how difficult it is for developers to keep players engaged between content releases.
The wedding scenario is credible if you know something about Marvel’s background since Rogue and Gambit are one of the most iconic X-Men couples, and their marriage was a significant event in the comics. If Marvel Rivals is going to incorporate such a storyline, it might even be a clever move to attract the old Marvel fans who want to see character interactions deepened.
Then there is also the matter of whether or not there will be significant changes in gameplay along with the narrative flow. Are new missions going to be added? New modes? Or is it just about narrative enhancement through cinematics and maybe some new dialogues? The community seems to expect more significant content drops than just the storytelling fluff.
While we are waiting for the announcement tomorrow, it is clear that PlayStation and Xbox players are all eagerly anticipating what’s next for Marvel Rivals.
