Fortnite, the popular battle royale game, has just announced yet another celebrity collaboration which triggered diverse reactions from the community. On this occasion, the official Fortnite account quoted: “A little more chaos might be good for us. The Mother of Thorns has arrived,” attaching what looks like the character reveal of Doja Cat. To be fair, the gaming community is considerably split on this matter.
Right after the very first reactions, it becomes evident that the public is split into two opposing camps – those who love the character and those who hate it. Some fans, like mali93707, openly admit their liking for the singer, saying, “I just love Doja Cat,” while others, like Memedemonlord, personally regard it as “one of the worst collaborations but I respect your opinion.” Another user, Drizzy80x5, unflinchingly admitted his negative view and remarked, “Skin is so ugly and bad.” Ouch!
At this stage, the discussion really gets down to what is the matter. A large portion of the audience sees Doja Cat’s being in the game mainly targeted at kids as a bad choice. WolfC4T, for example, accused Fortnite of “marketing indecency to children,” and Scrapepe_Eth wondered, “Why are you letting whores be skins in a kids game?” DarkLeelan31 went even further to turn his exclamation of recent collaborations into a rant invoking “pedos and murderers.” Yikes!
On the other hand, a player group just seems to be astonished at how it was done. TylerG348474 stated about “This botched ass animation for such a good ass song” which definitely is a valid point. The animation does look a little… rushed? And WhatLamaIs wants to know the reason behind the skin still being here until next month just because it is Halloween-themed. That’s really a good question, to tell you the truth.
However, the situation is far from being all negative as quite a number of gamers are actually thrilled. Many of the users were asking for the skin in the comments under Fortnite Leaks accounts with “Me please 🙏,” “I want it so bad,” and “I just want her red skin please😭😭” being the most common phrases. Therefore, it is pretty clear that there is a fan base for this collaboration even though the haters are louder.
The chaos theme is most probably intentional at this point. DukeBishopGonzo was the first to sense it when he tweeted “More chaos mentioned 🗣️🗣️” along with some flame emojis. MNIDakota simply replied “Chaos huh” while what appears to be a screenshot is attached. The Mother of Thorns title truly suits the spooky mood that they are trying to create this season.
Another interesting thing is that so many players are mentioning the things they would like instead. SPIDERMAYCRY is still keeping his fingers crossed for Dante from Devil May Cry and is asking with a crying emoji: “And still no Dante?”. Beantrailmix just wishes them to “Release moss legends” which, okay, I agree, is a bit random but fine. And MisterMeatyMan is telling “Do the other one!” whatever that means.
Moreover, some practical problems came to light – josephsherlock0 appears to be the one who can’t find his/her/his treat axe and back bling in the inventory which is definitely annoying. QtSwift13709 is the one who is not happy because “Guys, you added not a single new thing to rank btw 😭😭😭😭” which I take as a sign of frustration with ranked updates? At times the replies get a little confusing because of the grammar.
On top of that, the whole question about Fortnite’s relevance resurfaces repeatedly. tonicollprieto stated: “Fortnite is dead. Just play Battlefield 6 you guys.” But if it really is dead, then why still follow the official account and reply to their tweets? It indeed makes one think.
The timing is also quite intriguing – SpartanOfTheAp1 mentioned that they would get Doja Cat “after Ghostface comes to the shop tomorrow” which indicates that Halloween will be filled with horror-themed crossovers. hedhehrh is requesting them to “Let us use the kiss me more emote with her skins” which would definitely be incredible if they actually meet that demand.
At the end of the day, Fortnite collaborations are unavoidably the hot topic and the Doja Cat Mother of Thorns skin issue is not an exception. It is either love or hate but it is indeed the chaos that was promised with the tweet. The different views are a clear sign that Epic Games cannot please everyone but at the same time, they know how to keep the talk alive. Even if the talk is sometimes just people whining. The skin will most likely be a best-seller anyway because that’s how Fortnite works. Another day, another debated collaboration that will fade from memory in two weeks when the next big thing arrives. PlayStation and Xbox players continue to debate these collaborations across platforms.
