Well, Treyarch took these very crucial steps to update and change the Black Ops 7 beta; and honestly? Well, the buzz has been all about doors. Whatever you call it: DOORS. According to the developers, they have manipulated the workings of doors several times in the game, and it has been greeted with reactions varying all over the spectrum from appreciation to complete anarchy.
Three changes are highlighted in the official Treyarch tweet: Several doors in The Forge and Cortex maps were permanently opened, the time of automatic doors staying open before they closed was increased from 2 seconds to 4 seconds, and an increase in the range within which doors opened automatically as a player approached. They appear to just be minute changes for the naked eye but change in the flow of map hilariously spells a big change in gameplay for a Call of Duty multiplayer game where pace is everything.
But the greater story is how players started reacting to these changes in door mechanics. JeremiahNegron pointed out the irony, “Hilarious that in a vidoc, you guys stated you had a ‘Doors Meeting’ and decided to take them all out. But now we got more doors then ever in COD history and its every single map lmao. I get its was a statement on specific types of doors but the irony is that its worse now.” This comment quite well marks the evolution of the situation with doors in COD, where at some point the very idea of removing them entirely was considered, to currently working on fine-tuning their mechanics.
Everything quickly branched off into several other discussions amongst players debating whatever from door mechanics to the wider state of the game. Another user, Itsnummys, vented their frustration about the whole door system: “So the only doors that don’t matter are the ones that stay open??? Bro jus take them ALL OUT” – pretty much sums up the mindset some players have regarding doors. Then H0TSH0TFPS takes a more measured approach: “the auto doors were neat but i think yall may have went overkill with them haha” – crediting the new concept but questioning the execution.
That was when an entire…) spiraled into arguments about who was “pressed” about what, an exchange between itsmistahhjayy and RefundBlackOps7 bouncing around accusing each other of being overly emotional about the changes, laden with laughing emojis and accusations of blocking. It was… a lot. What it does reveal though is how passionate Call of Duty fans get over even the tiniest gameplay changes.
A few took the conversation to vent other game-related complaints. idontknowbutyuh fed back into zombies territory with “unique default zombie HUD/UI/menu, increase weapon damage across the board, reduce price of everything, remove old bosses”-so while multiplayer players are focused on doors, zombie fans also have their wishlist.
And with that, the door debate suddenly finds itself diving into other game-related topics, with Slllits commenting, “Doesn’t matter what they do, the COD burnout is real and BF6 will always be a better game”-throwing that lovely classic console-war debate energy into a convo revolving around…doors. Naturally.
What is interesting is how Treyarch has been adapting to feedback on the beta in real-time. The fact that these changes are being implemented while the beta is in full swing shows that Treyarch is going out of its way to capture the player experience and optimize the game before release. The changes to doors seem to address flow and reduce frustration-the longer open period keeps movement less interrupted and greater activation range means not having to stop sudden to activate door opening.
Yet the community response here shines a light on a much deeper issue in game development-the tension between innovation and tradition. Some players embrace the automatic door mechanics as a minor quality of life improvement, whereas others see it as an unwarranted wrinkle added to the classic Call of Duty experience. Royalblazen observed that “the problem was always the doors on the left that caused camping, especially those steps when you come through that door out of spawn someone always headpeaking waiting”- this is to say that door placement and mechanics can directly influence gameplay strategies and camping areas.
The entire door situation has become a strange microcosm of bigger discussions about the philosophy of game design. Jaxson 🙂 even posed the ultimate question, “What if the Doors got removed completely. What if” – bringing the conversation to its most logical extreme and leaving everyone wondering what Call of Duty would be like without doors.
With these changes in place, it is going to be interesting to see whether these door changes stick or whether Treyarch will make further alterations based on player feedback. The mixed reaction definitely shows that there is no silver bullet that will satisfy all, but developer-community interaction is precisely why the beta is! Whether you love it, hate it, or think the whole door discussion is utterly ridiculous, one thing is for sure – the buzz about Black Ops 7 is big, and sometimes the smallest mechanics garner the most conversation within gaming communities.
