The first official trailer for Ghost of Tsushima has been dropped by none other than PlayStation and has truly undone the internet. Now, the teaser gave an opportunity for guesswork; no one saw the reaction coming. The official tweet reads simply, “Prepare for picturesque duels,” alongside the link. And the reply section? Hell hath no fury!
First thing first, the game looks spectacular. Ghost of Tsushima was among the most beautiful games ever created, the other side of which is not even visible here?? Snowy landscapes, new combat animations, the feeling of it all; chef’s kiss. But apparently, a lot of people don’t even watch gameplay and are too busy reasoning through… Well, anything.
That, of course, has turned out the largest controversy, the female lead character. People started in on the “woke” crap from the very get-go. One guy, @Jakeraz, simply asked, “Why did you have to go woke and do a female protagonist?” As if women didn’t exist in Japanese history. Then @WhyOhWhy187 replied, “She’s a woman she would be killed in the first 10 seconds 🤣🤣🤣” And I’m just like… First, a historical accuracy argument in a game about ghost samurai? Really?
Wait, wait, though: it gets better. And there’s the voice actress thing? There’re some who consider her to be antifa or something. @GamerMemoirs82 launched into a tirade calling her “an ANTIFA TERRORIST” and “openly racist” and “celebrates murder.” Probably… a bit much? And, you know, multiple accounts keep spamming “RIP Charlie Kirk,” which is literally perfectly nonsensical in context.
In the meantime, though, @sentinelgamer01 is miffed about the “replacement of Jin Sakai” and then states that they’d rather go through their backlog, which, alright, fine, if you’re attached to the character, but like… it’s a new game in a new setting? Then, @Eatnsleep4ever responded pretty weirdly with, “Make legends mode an open world with my custom samurai. If I can avoid playing the protagonist I’ll pay for it.” So you’re going to pay full price… to not play the main character? That’s some gaming logic right there.
Not all gloom, though! @just_games1984 is ready to snap some shots in photo mode. Honestly, me probably too! The original Ghost had one of the best photo modes ever, and this looks better. And @uquidcard talking about stacking PS cards for the launch isn’t a bad idea.
One of the funniest replies might be “My deepest sympathy for the community manager of this account that has to see and read all these comments,” from @ItsKiraWorld. Imagine being the social media person at PlayStation right now having to sift through all this madness. And @andrewtraga clapped back to another hater: “Oh no, Sony is going to go bankrupt because you are not going to buy the game 😭😭” That’s that perfect hit back to all these nutjobs.
What is wild are how quickly it’s gone off of “everybody’s excited about another new game” to…whatever the hell’s going on now. The trailer is insane-looking – new combat mechanics, what looks like grappling hook systems – and that gorgeous, Hokkaido-inspired setting. Instead, half the replies are culture war nonsense, some of which may not even be true.
One more thing: Several are holding up, like a benchmark, The Last of Us Part 2 for “Woke games failing,” which… didn’t that game sell like 10 million copies? @WhyOhWhy187 claims it “was not financial success,” but like, pretty sure it made a billion dollars? My memory is fuzzy, but pretty sure it did just fine.
Either way, Ghost of Yotei looks like it could be one more Sucker Punch masterpiece. The original was one of the finest PS4 exclusives, and here we are, building on everything that made the last game great. If people wanna get mad about the protagonist or voice actors or blah blah… their problem. The game looks beyond gorgeous, and we can’t wait to see more gameplay.
Random idea here-wouldn’t it be dope to see black-and-white Kurosawa mode make a return? That was one of the coolest features in the first game and would look insane with the snowy landscapes.
So, yeah, the internet will internet. People will complain about anything nowadays. In the meanwhile, the rest of us will be out actually looking forward to the potentially gorgeous samurai adventure. The trailer is up on YouTube if you want to see the actual game instead of reading off-the-rails Twitter comments.
