Alright, this is NOT a drill for ye. Sonic the Hedgehog is officially crashing Rocket League and Fortnite in what very well might be the most hyped crossover of the year. Something was ever so slightly brewing, but this was not anything one could have pegged. Glee erupted all over when the announcement went official.
A good chunk of this Sonic collab shall be released VERY SOON, according to the cryptic message from Rocket League. And I mean very, very soon. Like, the second you finish reading this article, the stuff might have already dropped soon. Fortnite is just about to follow suit. The hype has been off the chart with Fortnite of late, but Sonic??? Now that’s a hype of an entirely different magnitude.
And the response was just what was expected. Chaos and mayhem! Chaos! Chaos! Some even shouted, “ITS NOT JUST SHOES LETS GOOOOO.” And, honestly, same. There’s a rumor going around that maybe the Fortnite entry might just be some slick cosmetics, like shoes, but come on. It’s Sonic. No way Epic would do Sonic dirty like that, right?
They’re begging hard for full-on skins; like full Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and maybe even Shadow skins if we’re lucky. The demand is insane. One single comment said, “PLEASE GIVE US SKINS!!!” with probably a billion exclamation marks, and that’s honestly goosebumps. Another player even said that they would literally reinstall Rocket League just for this collab, which is like the best vibe ever.
But wait, there’s more. Speculation about this unlocking more SEGA crossovers into other games has begun amongst some players. Like, imagine Super Monkey Ball or Jet Set Radio stuff in Fall Guys?? That would be insane. Someone even brought up Yakuza, which like… Kiryu Kazuma in Rocket League when???
More datamined stuff is out there hinting toward the possibility of a Sonic goal explosion in Rocket League, and that would be a perfect one! Imagine scoring a goal, and instead of a normal goal explosion, Sonic spins around with rings flying all over! That needs to happen!
The timing is kind of crazy because shortly before this, we had Fortnite launching Peacemaker, Batman Mobile, and Back to the Future in or about a month, and now we have Sonic? Epic really doing some hard collaboration work, and honestly, I’m loving it. My wallet is just sobbing at the moment because of it.
There’s some fear going around that the Fortnite part might just be shoes or something minor, but hey, just look at the announcement. It says “big part of the collaboration.” Doesn’t sound like just shoes to me. Sounds like something substantial. Maybe we’ll get a Sonic skin; maybe a backbling that plays the Green Hill Zone theme; maybe even a glider that looks like the Tornado plane. The possibilities are endless.
For Rocket League, though, you could have Sonic cars, decals, goal explosions, and a special boost that leaves behind those classic gold rings. Now imagine cruising around in a car that looks like Sonic’s shoes. So ridiculous, and so amazing.
It’s a goomba stomp, with lots of momentum gained at Sonic speed. Memes are already being created, hype posts are being shared, players are totally losing their minds, and for good reason, thanks to the long wait to finally get Sonic in these games. It’s been a long time.
Interesting to put it out there, Sonic as a character is already in PUBG Mobile as a buddy pet thing. So, there is precedent for him popping up in battle royale games. And with pets coming soon to Fortnite, maybe we can get a lil’ Sonic buddy that follows you around. That would be adorable.
Now, the short of it-they have an enormous salvo type of launch coming very soon for both games. Rocket League players may even land content first, but afar will not be the position of Fortnite. Judging by the player reactions so far, this is possibly going to be the most popular crossover ever played on either game. Sonic has that pull, you know?
I hope we get more than just Sonic. I’d like to see Tails and Knuckles. Maybe even Dr. Eggman as a villain skin would be perfect. Driving around Rocket League as Dr. Eggman in one of his machines would be the best thing ever.
So now that we’re well into the announcement and the hype is real, keep your eyes on both games; this collab is dropping real soon and it’s something you don’t want to miss. Sonic is splitting his focus on car soccer and battle royale finally-utterly about time. Gotta go fast!
