Thus, Bungie was the last time an organization reminding the playerbase that the Heavy Metal event is going to end tomorrow at weekly reset-and here lies an interesting issue: the community’s reaction has truly not been mixed; in fact, mostly negative-a little painful because this event is really meant to be enjoyed.
Heavy Metal is a time-limited PvP mode wherein you get to pilot huge mechs and tanks. Sounds fun, right? The population has been calling it “boring,” “garbage”-and they are asking to see it removed from the game altogether. Yikes!
One of the more interesting ones was from @theband1tt, claiming,” Most boring event so far,” and the answer from replying @subc0der was just, “Delete the game mode.” Harsh-but you gotta respect the honesty. Others chimed in with comments; @noshenaniganery begged, “Please don’t waste events on this stupid game mode anymore.” Pretty much, most people felt that the mode did not deliver.
The player’s grumble includes not just the boring gameplay but the grind itself. @intaloemanoel alleges that “dailies take way too long, and you have to complete all of them to level the mini pass.” And then loot; @EmperoNan expressed his displeasure: “If I hadn’t got a single one, they would’ve dropped only shiny shotguns while I was playing, only swords.” This must be painful after so much time.
But if this is already somewhat problematic, then it is going to get worse. @Nolhanpadrona2 offers a whole different one: “You need a subscription on PlayStation to play it; it should not be the case for a free-to-play game like Destiny 2,” comparing it with other F2P titles like Fortnite and Apex that don’t require one. Naturally, @Maddog12968 agrees with the rant, saying, “But this is the standard for all online-only games;” yet the complaint persists.
Then some tried to find a few positives or at least attempted to. @Vladimir198 claimed to have “injoyed heavy mental” but thought that the sparrow was way too heavy or slow. Conversely, @ryalbluupurpgld describes it as core fun, with @HavokZzzzz countering, “You are easily pleased.” So, not quite an endorsement.
The overall opinion is that the mode was a miss. Called slow by @FadedKaiser and boring, not engaging by others who ask Bungie to bring back sparrow racing instead. @Deluxejeff joined in with, “Delete it and bring back sparrow racing league,” which should give a fair idea of how entrenched these players’ feelings are in terms of what they want out of these events.
Then to another one, @tobi_lab stated: “This mode and the FOMO of it sucks.” Now, forcing people through a mode that they hate for rewards has rarely ever looked good. Joining in the chorus, @jhsnbdr agreed; doing this to good gear was simply not fun.
It’s far from just being bemoaned. Some players have used this particular instance for a general assault on Bungie’s approach. @ChrisEnnis1 went on a serious tirade about Bungie needing to start listening to their player base and used Helldivers 2 as an example of developers who listen. “Players have been requesting maps, dungeons, raids, or old D1 content for ages, and instead — well, you get this, Heavy Metal, which nobody really wanted,” they said.
So, what does this mean for us? Heavy Metal is ending officially, and most players seem to be ready to say goodbye. They called the mode boring, grindy, and not rewarding enough. People were upset about loot, called gameplay slow and boring, and the reception was downright negative.
Here, Bungie tried to do something different, and, you know, not all should succeed. But the community’s reaction could not have been more clear: this one was a miss. As put by @The_Danggler, “I kept telling myself to push through to max rank but I couldn’t do it because it wasn’t fun.”
If you have any challenges left to complete, do not forget to collect your rewards before reset. After hearing all of this, though, if you choose not to finish, it’s probably the best time to just walk away.
