Prior to the announcement by the official account for League of Legends esports, we always knew that Movistar KOI, with the Spanish org, say, has been in some trouble, had officially qualified for the 2025 League of Legends World Championship. You read it well. 2025. We are just starting to enter into 2024 and already have one team set for arguably the largest tournament next year?? Crazy.
The tweet is really straightforward: a “WELCOME TO WORLDS” graphic congratulating the team. But the replies-these replies are the real story. An absolutely beautiful concoction of confusion, hype, salt, and utter chaos. Classic League community: never change.
First came the suspicious sort of confusion. An individual named Leewis replied to someone else who had asked, “BUT WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN JAJAJSJSHSHSHSHSHQ,” which, like, mood. The laughter in all capitals is almost self-explanatory and captures the disbelief present amongst many players. Somebody just kind of dropped this qualification out of left field for the large majority of the players.
And of course, haters. Naturally, people go on to question the ability of the team to go far on the international stage. The user Kamikadze got into an exchange with somebody, saying while they’re happy for the team; “they will have to prove a lot.” Fair enough, but maybe let them have their moment? In return, another user, justherestalk1n, said: “Well, for 4 out of the 5 players and the coach this is for the first time they will be going to Worlds ever, so they are basically rookies on an LEC stage.” It was almost like, “Jesus chill out, I guess you are super successful in life.” Oof! Passive aggressive much?
Of course, the missing contender mentions remain. “‘Where is @FNATIC,'” one person asked; a fair question, considering Fnatic’s legacy. Another just taunted KC, a rival org: “were is KC? hahahahaahaha.” That’s how you’d expect any esports rivalries to run: nonstop.
Now, the weirdest, and maybe funniest, thread of comments surrounds something else. Quite a few people bring up that literally just this organization was kicked out of VCT, aka Valorant Champions Tour. Like, one minute you’re out of the VALORANT franchised league, next minute, you’re going to the biggest tournament in League of Legends. Really great plot twist here. Kevin nailed it: “Gets kicked from VCT, instantly makes worlds lmao.” Such a whiplash.
Amidst all chaos, some genuine fans are celebrating. “WE ARE HERE,” screamed one joyous fan along with a hype video. Another one simply said “Contrats 💜💙,” in the colors of the team. Good to see good vibes amid all that noise.
So what really stands behind such an early qualification? How can a team lock in a spot for a tournament that is almost a year and a half away? Well, from the tweets itself, it is not really clear, but probably because of championship points from the last season, or maybe their performance in a certain qualifying event. The Riot system is sometimes so complicated, but the thing is: Movistar KOI has done enough to pay their ticket. They in.
That’s huge for them, indirect consideration of the narrative behind the team. This is what some of the replies pointed out: this is no longer the old MAD Lions roster some might still be remembering. This is an all-new squad with fresh faces, ready to make that big name for themselves on this massive stage.
It is going to mean a big moment for the Spanish esports scene. They say that for Movistar KOI; it’s big there, and having them represent at Worlds is huge. Already registered in those replies is the overflow of passion of their fan base: some positive, some-aggressively on the curious side.
Anyway, the tweet is there-the news official. Movistar KOI goes to the 2025 League of Legends World Championship. Are you hyped? Are you confused? Are you just writing them off? Somehow, admit-it’s one hell of a weird way to start the year. Now we’re just going to have to hang in there for like, forever, until we see them play. The wait will be torturous. For now, congrats to the team. They certainly earned that spot.
Now, what was I saying? Oh, right. Yeah. Worlds 2025. It is a happening thing. And Movistar KOI is going to be there. You better mark your calendars now, I guess. In case you have any 2025 calendars lying around. Considering it’s so far out, it’s kind of ridiculous and kind of cool at the same time. Who could’ve thought that esports moves that fast? Anyway, that’s what the news says. Now let’s see what other craziness is there in Internet-land.
