It was revealed via Insider Gaming that the PS6 will apparently feature a detachable disc drive mechanism. While some would say it is unsurprising, I say it is indeed news.
It all started with the detachable disc drive concept for the PS5 Slim and Pro. Sony basically wanted to provide a digital-only console yet maintain the ability for the end user to add the disc drive if they choose. And it looks like they are going to keep that arrangement through the next gen, which from a coordinate standpoint makes some sense: one SKU, less confusion, more flexibility. But really: it’s just that… they’re charging us now for what used to come for free before.
The viral tweet of CharlieINTEL unleashed quite the responses. Some were like, “They can hold off PS6 for like 5 more years bro” – shoutout to Greggs for that. And with reason: Etsy is still great, and the Pro has just released, so it does look somewhat early to be talking about PS6. But that’s how these console cycles function. Leaks and rumors usually start years in advance.
Then there is another guy, Chris Jackson, who says the release should be in 2028 and that the next Xbox should drop around the same time. Yah, that is basically what usually goes down: console generations launch more or less together. But with Microsoft having just basically said, “we’re not doing generations anymore,” who knows?
Now, the real tea is in the comments about cross-gen games. Like, Spark is actually out here asking why we’re still getting some games on PS4 in 2025. And he is not wrong. It is now 2025, and huge releases like Call of Duty and all the major sports titles are still landing on the PS4. It’s bailing on the potential of both PS5 and PS5 Pro. TEGA Games then rightly pointed out that publishers won’t leave money behind; there are still tens of millions of players on PS4—the biggest market. But it is indeed frustrating for most of us who upgraded, wanting games that really push for new hardware.
There was an entire thread about how cross-gen compatibility means that on PS6, games might still be built with PS4 in mind, relying on upscaling and frame generation to fake better performance instead of native power. And this fear is justified. If the PS6 is going to be held back by last-gen support, then what is the point?
Meanwhile, the cultivators already said that they’re ditching PS6 for their own rig. Truthnonfiction remarked, “If you plan on investing in a PS6 instead of a PC,” with a laughing emoji, and then burgur69 replied, “Nahh just gonna get a PC 🤣.” The PC master race is always lurking.
Another thing Zeakfurgay said about the detachable drive rumor: This accessory could disprove the idea of the PS6 being a dockable handheld like the Switch. Because if it’s got a detachable disc drive, then it’s probably not portable. Unless, of course, they make a weird-ass accessory for it, which… I wouldn’t rule out for Sony.
Then we’ve got the classic joke from itsjustajoke90: “2032: PS7 will just be the box, system and other components sold separately.” Which, at least at this rate, might not be too far-fetched. We are already buying consoles without drives and adding them later. What’s next? Buying the GPU separately?
The outcry is mixed overall, with some annoyed that Sony appears to be taking this one through, some seeing it as a practical route. But the majority just want to shut up about PS6 for now since PS5 is still going and now that crossgen support will almost certainly carry into the next gen, it will be interesting to watch how Sony handles backward compatibility with technical generation of new.
This means the PS6 might probably be bumping the detachable disc drive higher on its priority list. No news there, really, but still plenty for talkers to chew on.
