Nintendo has just tweeted about their new Super Mario Party Jamboree game scheduled for the Switch 2, and I am still unclear about what’s happening with the numbers? The new “Together Dice” feature is being hyped, where 1 + 2 = 2 stars instead of 3, and frankly, this Mario Party community is collectively losing it over this.
The official Nintendo America account tweeted a video of Donkey Kong and Pauline rolling dice. This looks like a new cooperative mode called ‘Together Dice.’ But when Pauline rolls a 2 and DK rolls a 1, the game only rewards them 2 stars instead of the 3 that they deserve. The phrase “The math is mathing” also fails to illustrate the situation since there is an apparent lack of math, unless of course, there is some new Mario Party math that the community is unaware of.
The game is clearly confusing the players in the replies. In a somewhat serious manner, a user named André responded to Nintendo and said “sounds like DK needs to go back to math class” with a laughing emoji. I mean, really, what kind of new game mechanics are breaking the rules of basic addition? Is this some form of team penalty system? Are there secret modifiers? The tweet provides no clarification, and it is maddening for people.
On the other side, people are simply replying to the tweet asking Nintendo for actual things. One person requested Diddy Kong as a DLC character, another demanded SnipperClips 2, and as always, there’s the usual person commenting on the appeal of Princess Peach. The trademark Twitter replies never seem to change.
However, what is most relevant is the comments on the Nintendo Direct videos. Several users were asking about the date of the next Direct. One of them said, “my math says Nintendo drops the direct right now,” while another user responded with “Not until next week.” Everyone seems to expect proper news, and this strange dice mechanic teaser seems to be causing them even more frustration.
There is a bit of community discussion on whether this should come as a free update instead of a whole new game. User Rosalina from Super Mario Galaxy (iconic username, btw) stated, “This should’ve been a free update, at the very least the Party extra rulesets and resolution upgrade—with Jamboree TV being optional.” That is… a valid point, I guess. Is this going to be a cross-gen title with the Switch 2 releasing?
The continual comments of random trolls saying “WE DONT CARE” and “SONY SOLOS PS5 RULES” on every Nintendo tweet is something else. Like “bruh” we know, you hate the company. Maybe direct your bitter remarks to PlayStation tweets.
I recall Mario Party having the weird dice blocks with negative numbers or only even numbers. What about when some characters had their own custom dice? Maybe the team dice is a concept where the individual values don’t add up properly but give some form of average instead. Or maybe it is a visual bug in the prerelease version that Nintendo’s social media team missed?
I find it odd that they also mentioned “Jamboree TV” which sounds like a streaming or spectator mode. Is Nintendo trying to make Mario Party more watchable for streams and tournaments? Given that Mario Party thrives on YouTube and Twitch, this could be a very clever idea.
We all really want to know the details. Nintendo! Please clarify the mechanics instead of posting weird math and expecting us to work it out. The clip is terribly confusing. Folks are speculating a star minimum or some other arbitrary rule… So much chaos.
As this is announced for the Switch 2, can we focus on this? Does it imply the game will be on Switch and Switch 2 both, but with different features? Or is it just for Switch 2? Everything around the branding is ambiguous. Since Nintendo has not officially confirmed their next console, everything remains speculative.
The contrasting reactions in the replies sum up the Nintendo community’s current situation quite well. They are excited for new games but are also weary from the silence with no information and odd reveals. While some people aren’t afraid to show appreciation for its look and many are calling for Directs, the rest are either memeing or pointing at the nonsensical math.
I am little intrigued about the Together Dice mechanic, but the rest of us are filled with confusion. If it looks baffling, the answer is no. Mario Party games have strange rules which do not make sense in theory, and this might be another example. It might also be the promotional blunder. The thing with Nintendo is that, with their games, you never know until it actually launches.
I am as confused as anyone else here. I think I started talking about the dice math and then ended up thinking about console generations and streaming features. Welcome to Nintendo announcements— they always force us to guess more than they actually provide the answers.
Instead of giving cryptic teasers, players want to be told directly what it is. Perhaps it will be explained in the next Direct, but Mario Party community will continue debating whether 1 + 2 actually equals 2 in the Mushroom Kingdom.
