HoYoVerse use the chance offered by the new Genshin Impact character, Lauma, to dive into some advanced lore and split the player base into “Hold on, is that a biblical reference?” and “Here it is!” fanbases as they blast detailed theories all over the internet. I’m a fan of the latter. Community and I drew our attention immediately to the official Genshin Impact tweet’s introduction of Lauma’s story, also known as the Frostmoon Scions, with beautiful artwork, but it was a single sentence that made all the commotion that most caught my attention. “Humans could never build a tower to the heavens,” gave us Tower of Babel references, I believe.
Players are drawing remarkably quick connections, even faster than “wish pity” could ever be mentioned. The tweet is pretty straightforward—Genshin is introducing Lauma’s character and giving us a glimpse of the Frostmoon Scions—but that one metaphorical line about the tower… wow—wow. Teyvat going strong in the comparisons, obviously the comment section is freaking out. It’s the biblical story of how humans tried to build a tower to heaven and God shut that down by confusing their language and now in Teyvat, it sounds like Celestia or the gods pulled a similar stunt.
For example, Randy Raditya noted, “So I guess, I’m afraid if they build a tower reaching to the Celestia, the Shade will intervene,” which honestly encapsulates the sentiment well. Shades are likely dark, godlike beings who hate mortals trying to climb above their level of existence. And another user, Layla, just posted a Tower of Babel reference with a thinking emoji, and honestly, the same. The parallels are too strong to ignore.
As I mentioned earlier, it gets even more interesting because some gamers are bringing up other game references as well. Dark_Sailor7 talked about Dragon Age: Origins and the Tower of Mages, where mages were isolated, which, honestly, adds another layer to this whole thing. Could Lauma’s story be hinting at some kind of magical isolation or punishment from the gods? And then there’s OpTiMiSt_CaT39 wondering if Teyvat is literally the tower, like in the Tower of God series, which, like, whoa, mind blown.
The anticipation for Lauma is truly valid. Players have already started planning their pulls with sayings like, “Lauma we are pulling for you 🌙” from About NodKrai, and “C6 Lauma will be mine💚” from another user. There is even talk of saving primogems for characters like Columbina which shows the depth of planning gacha players engage in. But some are just enjoying the visuals; eveblum_art said, “These graphics are breathtakingly beautiful 😭🙇♀️,” and yes, Genshin is known for its always stunning visuals.
What is impressive is how quickly the community reacted to the biblical and mythological themes. ShineiTheFaker joked, “Tower of Babel? Oh wait, they still speak the same language…” which is a good observation—in Teyvat there is no language barrier so maybe in this world the punishment was altered. CulturedMav20’s comment saying “trekking biblical territory” is correct as well. The game has always intertwined many mythologies, but this is the most direct reference to the bible and the most direct one to date.
Speaking of which, the question comes to mind of whether the story of the ancient humans attempting to climb Celestia is going to be uncovered. Daemia Chirabys asked, “Are we going to learn about the humans who tried to build their way up to Celestia?” and that sounds like an amazing lore expansion. As we all know, Celestia has been connected to many questionable events in Teyvat’s history and this has the chance to tie in very well.
Naturally, the memes are bound to come flooding in — BrungusDeluxe infected the community with “nice tower be a shame if something happened to it,” a meme filled with the image of a crumbled tower. The epitome of memes that strike a core of comedic honesty is that in Genshin Impact, rest assured, something always happens to the ancient structures.
The reason why this is so inceptive is the way HoYoVerse never stops building this rich world that can be effortlessly examined and talked about. Every piece of art, every line of dialogue, and every character tease is analyzed to incredible depths because the lore continuously impresses. Additionally, with Lauma being a part of the Frostmoon Scions, HoYoVerse’s comments clearly imply that there is more to learn about this faction and their role in the world.
It’s clear in the responses that they are not here solely for the gacha and gameplay; they are here for the lore and world-building because of how deeply immersed they are. They are having fun with the material, making connections, theorizing around the game’s future and plot points; it’s this kind of interaction that keeps Genshin Impact running after so many years.
Whether you’re here for the lore or to whisk Lauma along with other Genshin characters, the story and its revelations gave us a ton to chew. The lore was dropped along with the reactions of the players and the biblical references, which are just the tip of the iceberg for the new content. It’s evident Genshin is still one of the biggest topics within the gaming community. I will say I’ll binge the teaser again, with frame by frame analysis, no shame—I have to digest everything again.
