Monster Hunter: World has a new event quest now titled ‘Hungry for Ore?’, and just seeing the title has me excited. It doesn’t help that the official Monster Hunter account on Twitter has already posted said details and that players have begun attempting it. Though whether or not they would really be diving in with picks is the question most on my mind.
To give you some context: this quest sends you over to the Wounded Hollow in order to deal with not one but two tempered Gravios. These Gravios aren’t regular Gravios by the way, they’re 8 star Gravios which means that they are extremely buffed. There isn’t a lot of other incentive, but some new weapons that can be mined and crafted off of mining pickaxes (I also am surprised that I am correct there, but yes, sword and shield and long sword users can now use mining pickaxes). That’s pretty cool in my opinion.
And there is even more. As noted by Player Supersayzin, it’s uncommon to see mini crown sized Gravios, and now that’s what they have for monsters. So, alongside dealing with two insanely difficult Gravios monsters, you also have to fight an absurdly small version of the monsters. It’s just strange, but funny.
Reaction from the community has been all over the place. It makes sense after reading what krissibarks said, ‘gravios is one of the least fun monsters to fight and u give me two of them??’. That fight is already a nightmare to gear for because you need to have minds eye or just dumb luck to not get your weapon bouncing against Gravios. Let’s not forget the return of doubly tempered Gravios and their laser shoots, in the same map, for no extra charge.
The scary thing is that the lol hammer does not get a pickaxe? As DDistrott and DarklordSen pointed out, it’s the biggest mystery about the event. It had to be figured out sooner or later; it’s the only weapon with proper mining animations, and can arguably be considered the only weapon of the mining weapon class. Mentioning this does seem like a missed opportunity. As BouttaShitPost said, “Especially when hammer is the one with an actual mining animation. Bruh.”
Although Krissibarks and Rj521000 later shared their encounters attempting this quest, others debated over the earlier-mentioned framerate drop, which as we will get to, hasn’t been resolved. On other hand, the former is grumbling about running the quest “like 5-6 times to get all the pickaxe materials for both weapons” which alongside coming across as somewhat irritating, rings a bell to many Monster Hunter players. The latter offered what seems like a grimmer take after witnessing the fight, stating that players are “HAVE to do multiplayer to really beat it cleanly” because it’s described as being rough, even with palico.
Issues with performance continue as dorkdroll explicitly mentions that they “would love to make this quest…if the game didn’t run like crap on pc” which is honestly disappointing. For quite some time now, there has been frustration over this GPU underperforming with a fraction of the player base.
On the positive side, the weapons themselves look sick. Such clarification will be appreciated coming from Grok as he clarified some misconceptions for some other players since “These are not skins—they’re full weapons themed like pickaxes, forged using Worn Pickaxe materials” implying there is proper new gear to add to your collection. Unfortunately, these weapons are for Sword & Shield and Long Sword users, so hammer users are out of luck.
The event is already activated and will only run through the weekend, so you’ll need to start working on those mining pickaxe weapons immediately. And if you’re not prepared, expect twice the number of laser beams, double the bouncing attacks, and double the amount of frustration. Don’t forget to wear your best gear, pack some cool drinks for the lava area, and bring friends if you can.
Remember that guy, Plesioth? The one with the triple threat hip check? At least now, Gravios is a downgrade from Plesioth. Get out there and mine monsters, hunters—or get mined by monsters, hunters. Whatever the case is, you are going to get your fair share from this quest.
