If you’ve been following Fortnite leaks, you’ve likely come across dataminer iFireMonkey’s latest reveal. And in this case, ‘reveal’ means an image catch that’s somewhat self-contradictory in the best possible way. Fortnite is collaborating with Deep Rock Galactic. Yes, the dwarf-mining game. Rock and stone, brothers.
What the image leak shows is a Fortnite character model that literally looks like a Deep Rock Galactic dwarf — in mining gear, prepared to either fight some bugs or build a ramp. The “distinct” art style of Fortnite has been discussed by some, who consider it “cell-shaded” or even “a bit weird,” but it is a dwarf in Fortnite, which is always a win. What’s not to love?
What is the reaction from players? Utter but good chaos. Every comment on the leak comprises the phrase “ROCK AND STONE!” Over and over again. This seems to be the cheer from the Deep Rock Galactic community, and it’s genuinely kind of heartwarming to see it shouted on end. It’s a great display of the enthusiasm from the community. There was one comment, “STONE AND ROCK! Oh wait,” which tries some lighthearted comedy and some shade on the other person’s attempt at the phrase.
The entire community is not instantly on board. Some one does have questions. Those questions are justified. The majority of Fortnite players have never gone to Hoxxes IV. The questions, “Who tf is that” and “What is this?” are being asked which prompts more and better known players to help. Explaining the game, one person said, “Left 4 Dead, but with bugs, roles, and mining-related goals. Top-notch co-op fun.” Which, honestly, is a brilliant and succinct description.
Why now is also sparking a discussion. One player understood it best because the Fortnite battle pass is themed around an underground mining pass. As such, it is only logical to have Deep Rock Galactic collaboration in Fortnite. It fits the tone. Another player was in a hurry to correct someone, saying the skins would fit Battle Royale better since, you know, in Deep Rock you kill bugs, not other players. But hey, it’s Fortnite. Logic is optional.
Money is of course an issue. “Time to lash out another 20 for this 😭 fortnite cooking so hard lately,” one player said, preparing for the damage to their wallet. Epic Games has been relentless with collaborations, leaving our wallets empty. Saying “no” to a dwarf is an option that many fans just don’t have.
Some users claim the Fortnite Instagram story is the source of the leak. Some users were struggling to find it, which caused more searching in the comments. Classic detective behaviour on the internet.
There’s always a sprinkle of absurd misidentifications for each leak. One user had the dwarf confused with Torbjörn from Overwatch, an understandable mistake since they are both bearded mascots. Another user thought it was a photo of streamer CaseOh_ for a second, which is funny. The internet is truly a strange place.
What I find most intriguing is how the Deep Rock Galactic community is reacting. “We’re rich” is another popular DRG voice line that’s being quoted in celebration. That particular phrase is spoken when a large chunk of gold is found. Their excitement in the comment section is evident. It’s an indie game with a good reputation and a positive return, and it is satisfying to see Fortnite recognizing this fanbase.
I find all of this information very compelling, especially coming from iFireMonkey, a fairly reliable source. While we only have a leak and nothing has been acknowledged by Epic Games, Ghost Ship Games, or the organization for that matter, the leak seems trustworthy. Because nothing is leaked about whether the collaboration is just one dwarf or a full collection of skins with accompanying back bling, pickaxe, release date, and other details that are bound to be exciting. That said, there’s definitely a lot to look forward to.
Having worked with Marvel, Star Wars, and even John Wick, Fortnite having an indie multiplayer game like Deep Rock Galactic feels unique and special. Gaming is being welcomed in all aspects. Hardcore DRG players and even gamers who have never heard of the game will surely enjoy the new approaches in the expanding world of Fortnite. Assuming you don’t mind, I am going to practice my ‘Rock and Stone!’ cheer.
