Minecraft sparked a small controversy on Twitter yesterday, which quickly spread all over social media. The official account tweeted, “Not only is it not Friday, it’s not even Thursday,” along with a picture of a sad ghast, and I am at a loss for words. I am simply stunned that someone thought it was a good idea to make a joke about the crushing pain of the weekday hustle we all face.
Let’s talk about the ghast first. It looks a bit sad, with its tentacles gently drooping. That’s what you feel when you get ready for Friday, only to realize it’s Wednesday and you have to drag your spirit back into your body. At this point, Minecraft is waging war on our collective mental state on a Wednesday afternoon.
Now, the replies? Oh my the replies are utter chaos. Immediately after the post, players started arguing over timezones, making demands for updates, and pretty much everything else in between. There was even this one user, @YUSEISAN2, who emerged with their month-old PS5 login issues. ‘It’s a shame you keep posting other info but nothing concrete about the real issue’ – wow, that’s a pretty low bar to stoop to. Not to mention, they posted it TWICE, so I can only imagine how grinding having their realms not work is.
Speaking of, the time zone drama continues being disorganized. @HurricaneFoxe joining in with “Speak for your own timezone smh” which like… do note that’s a pretty accurate statement. It’s not like everyone operates on Minecraft’s schedule, and it is worldwide. @FoxPourple even posting a map indicating some parts of the world already being Thursday. The geographical drama is definitely a thing.
Of course, this very quickly culminated into update speculation. Of course it had to. This is the Minecraft fandom after all – everything serves as an encoded message for upcoming content. @RoxlnnBR doing all the mental gymnastics: “nether -> warped forest -> enderman -> end END UPDATE CONFIRMED 🔥🔥🔥” Like, this is a tweet about days of the week but okay.
And @pqchanYT inquiring “Soooo Copper Update at Saturday?” which like… what even is the relation here? But that’s how Minecraft fans function – every post is a hint for the coming update. Remember when they thought the birch forest update was coming because a Mojang employee wore a yellow shirt? Same type of thing.
Also the wholesale fishing demands appearing from all corners. Asking “When are we getting whales in minecraft” from @Boosferrr which honestly… is a reasonable question. It’s been so long since the ocean update and there are still no whales? That’s cruel. And @KumoOfficcial demanding “Drop the marketplace shaders already” as if the marketplace really needs more visual options.
The chaos even dragged other games into the conversation for no reason?? Someone replied to @Tha_truth_mayne with “Football is a dead game,” which is… completely unrelated to Minecraft’s Thursday tweet. The internet really is something else.
Now on the feeling of this tweet, does anyone really want to talk about it? Beginning with @Darceyblastoise, who is crying over “School starts on Thursday tomorrow 😭😭😭” and @RythemBeatPvP, who is pleading “Why would you do this to me Minecraft,” as if the game physically attacked them. The extra drama about this tweet is more amusing than it should be.
Even memes have come out of the Ghast. With the tweet, “The ghast after dropping the N word: nuclear” @costa_mf very much so disturbed yet amused. And @t_bright81597 commented “Feels ghast man,” which is a very good pun.
Among the chaos, a few players stood out for taking a more reasonable approach by identifying the real issues that need to be addressed. Several people have been talking about the PS5 issues that seem to be ongoing and genuinely an issue. Along with the people talking about PS5, the paid realms and add-ons issues have been broken for over a month, and people have been saying they have been broken for even longer. So, they are indeed an actual issue that needs to be addressed by Mojang instead of the useless sad Ghast memes.
The tweet having thousands of likes and hundreds of replies was no surprise, again showing the Minecraft social media team’s ability to engage their audience. Letting everyone know the weekend is not close, they manage to get users talking, speculating, and demanding whale mobs for a reason.
Seeing such a simple tweet about days of the week, I am reminded how much of a “snapshot” this gives of the Minecraft community in general—be it in relation to hunger for an update, be it in relation to real track issues, be it the global playerbase dealing with timezones, and in relation to the absolute madness that follows this game every single place. Also, the Ghast looks very sad. I hope it’s OK.
I’m waiting for that day they tweet on an actual Friday or when they tweet about that whale update everyone wants. A person can dream, right?
