Today, Twitch went out and dropped an entirely random tweet. It came out of nowhere. Officially, Twitch said, “Have you touched grass today?” with just a picture of green grass. That’s all. That was the whole tweet. And, oh boy, did the replies? Well, they are quite entertaining. Absolutely insane but deliciously so.
For those who are really not super in touch with gamer slang, touch grass is a phrase that exploded online. Basically,… it means: get outside, breathe some fresh air, and remember what the real world actually is instead of spending too much time in the digital one. Most of the time, it’s said as a gentle jab at somebody very invested in an Internet argument who is one hundred percent online for hours without a break. So this coming from Twitch, a platform where people literally just sit there and watch other people play games for hours, is actually hilarious. So funny, maybe even a tad ironic.
Like, the community takes an instantaneous chaotic response to the very spirit of the tweet. Some were all about the vibe. TheLazyGamer went all-caps: “‘HELL YEAH !!! SURE DID !'”. Another one said, “I did!” showing a picture of their dog outside and being wholesome. It’s heartwarming to know that some people strike a balance with screen time and some actual time out in the world. Christopher Nathan Warnick added that he just went on a “3700 step walk.” Quite impressive, really, although he said, “still fat though…” See? Relatable, heh.
But then… there was the other side to it. The classic anti-authority gamer response. Therealstevethebeast150 came through with some undeniable truth: “A true gamer never touch grass.” Facts. No notes. That is basically a law of nature by now. TheMrsAmazing has got a pretty valid excuse too; “It is 5 am and I just woke up, so no.” Mood. And MorganfizzYT reminded everyone of a real-world concern most of us probably forgot about: “Can’t because of Covid.” A throwback to a wild moment, for sure.
And then real weird real fast. Of course, this is Twitter. User VenturousGamer began an extensive essay over the dangers of touching grass. I’m seriously not joking. “On the surface, touching grass seems worthwhile but also risks inviting you to contracting diseases depending on numerous factors.” They compared it to washing your salad. For real? They’re not wrong. You just can’t always know what’s out there. EloraBliss said she’s allergic to grass while calling it a “flex” for those with better immune systems. Which I totally agree with.
The jokes just kept on coming. ItsVibesTV said that they touched “Internet Gaming grass,” and then asked if it counted. Quantum Fiber said they’ve touched grass “in like three different games.” Which in the very least is technically true for most of us. HALOxKING even posted a screenshot of one of the games to question the legitimacy of the claim. The bit runs quite deep in that community.
But wait, just when you thought this Twitter thread couldn’t get any more chaotic with people airing grievances, it took a sharp turn: an array of responses unrelated to the subject of grass and everything to do with… well, basically about being mad at Twitch. This one user, REKTALDO_, fires back with, “no, but you desperately need to…”. Ouch. GeneralCross2 asked if Twitch has ever read their own Terms of Service. HuewE88 mentioned the whole platform moderation drama. Then… someouncement went deeper. Several replied to raise serious, controversial issues about the platform that had nothing to do with the original question. It went political right there—set the standard for any large Twitter thread nowadays. It’s like you can’t even ask about grass without someone bringing up the state of the world.
It’s a crazy mix of funny, sincere, and downright chaotic. Some are complacent in the joke, and others proudly declare their indoor lifestyle. Then you have those few who simply saw a blue checkmark and decided it was the right moment to go on a rant about everything wrong with the internet. This captures what internet culture was like in 2024. Twitch tried to be cute and relatable, while the internet did what it does best—turn every ask into a circus.
So, what’s the verdict? Did you touch grass today? Whatever the case, the replies prove that the gaming community is a big, diverse bunch—people who game, who joke, and who love to… well, complain a little. It’s all charm. Maybe next time, Twitch will think twice before asking such a loaded question. Or maybe they won’t, because, honestly, this kinda stole the show.
And for the record… no. I have not touched grass today. I have been working on this article. Maybe after this, I’ll go for a walk. Maybe I’ll boot up a game that has some really nicely textured grass in it. That basically counts, right?
