Preceding the start of the Hero Trial tomorrow, Blizzard dropped some unexpected concept arts for the new hero Wuyang, known as “black-horse” concept arts in Overwatch lingo. The devs must have been so sick of partying about this hero, and honestly? The player-base is just eating it up.
That, however, was a long way from glory for Wuyang, who had his design refined all along every step from the very first rough to the final splash art. The official OW Twitter account dusted off a side-by-side set of pictures exhibiting the early concepts versus the finished in-game model-and that transition was chef’s kiss. Some players have already gone so far as to name it one of the freshest knight designs in the game, with Strafe Esports calling the evolution one hell of a “🔥🎨.”
But at the same time, of course, others are not completely into it. Some of the responses accused Blizzard of “pandering to the Chinese market,” bringing up past examples where Lunar New Year was given far more coverage than Summer Games. @trabucooo1 really threw shade, stating that “first an exclusive event for them and now this.” Then @Kalyx_triaD reminded them that Mei-a Chinese hero-was released right at launch. Gamer talk forever; may it never die.
The Wuyang Mains Discord account (@wuyangmains) stands out from the rest, spotting that very minute detail of the earrings getting swapped in the final design. Such commitment!
From a playing standpoint, the Hero Trials run from tomorrow until August 18, giving the players a window to try the hero before his presumed full launch in the roster. And if one stops to judge by the concept arts, his very abilities must give crazy style points already.
Hardcore fans go crazy for his school jacket alt skin (@reddieredtoons called it “clean”), whilst the loyal stomping continues with shoutouts going from @gyu_neo: “please stop sharing the photos I took of my boyfriend.” Mood indeed.
And staying geared up in the true humor of an Overwatch spirit, someone (@Comixfan) just had to cause some more ruckus by talking about the open beta of Battlefield 6 appearing that weekend. Because, really, why not?
All in all, Wuyang seems like a fairly appropriate addition to the roster, with the entire controversy being in tow. If you’re here for the design, the drama, or just for another hero to main, the Trial kicks off tomorrow. Time to prove or disprove the hype.
And hey, if nothing else, at least we are last on the list of knowing his age range-between 18 and 23, thanks to @ItsBraumadan’s detective work. Priorities, people.
