A new dance emote, “Latch,” has joined the Fortnite roster, for the famous smash of Disclosure and Sam Smith, with the viewing being… less than unanimous. While the emote is priced at 500 V-Bucks, it allows players to walk along local Jam Tracks as far as spontaneous partying goes. While some will in all probability be speeding to the shop the moment they are granted permission, others are marking it with venom and glory as a flop.
A simple bouncy dance step keeping the rhythm of any Jam Track in process reminds one of Fortnite’s previous first attempts at interactivity, where players could put together one step for dances as opposed to just watching others do it. It just doesn’t seem to top the charts with everybody. People called it “horrid.” One even remarked: “It’s what white people do when there’s coleslaw at the function!” Ouch!
Then comes the discussion on whether the song was indeed the right pick. The song ‘Latch’ unquestionably rocks, but a greater number of players feel that the emote does nothing to promote the track. “Great song, trash dance,” expressed one tweet; a majority vocal on the sentiment that Epic really dropped the ball here. Many feel it would have made a good Jam Track as well, considering the Festival season to which it was “for” never really materialized.
That said, it is not all jabs at the emote! Several are already clandestinely plotting to purchase it as they say, “good day to spend some V-Bucks.” And, who are we kidding? It is always hit or miss for any Fortnite emote. Remember those days when Floss was so dynamic? Now, it is just another dance among hundreds.
I think the bigger issue comes with the burnout felt by emotes like this. Nostalgic gamer goes, ‘I miss when emotes were good. I miss when they were even a little bit special.’ And honestly! I do, too. A while back, getting a new emote was like hearing your favorite song: an occasion. Now, with so many being dropped at a time, it’s difficult for any single emote to really stick out.
Still, they aren’t holding back. Whether it’s Jam Tracks, Festival events, or nonstop shop updates… they’re trying to keep Fortnite relevant. Good or bad? That’s a big question. Half of the player base will have their wallets ready to accept cash for the next cosmetic drop. The other half? Waiting for something worthy of the hype.
The emote “Latch” somehow slowly begins to dilute this ever so vast list of: Lord of the dances. Love it or hate it, it is here, and knowing Epic, another one will probably be out within a month or two. So if you fancy it, grab it while it is still new. If not, then maybe there will be something cool coming next week.
