The recent Update 2.3, granted AutoDrive unto Cyberpunk 2077. Because who wants to drive in 2077 anyway? This patch release promised that the players could kick back while their cars drove for them; however, one can say the rollout has not quite been smooth.
The very feature that CDPR cheekily went on to say was “powered by advanced autonomous, self-aware technology” should have indeed been relaxing, like a Sunday off, for cruising through Night City. Sit back with your elbow on the window ledge and let the world go by—which is when it shouldn’t! Ironically, the game also warns that “in some very rare instances erratic, reckless, and dangerous driving might occur.” Rare might just be gamer-speak for “whenever the game feels like it,” commented a player.
John Edward (@equalasdust) shared how AutoDrive was less “futuristic luxury” and more “coasting to a dead stop like a glitched-out taxi.” @samuraisodaKP revealed that the game actually crashes if the player opens the menu mid-drive, with frame generation going haywire. So perhaps one ought to stay away from AutoDrive during high-speed chases for now.
Real players, however, cant stop raving about it. @mandarinvape called the feature awesome, albeit they felt that some improvement might be in order. @Gro3_ was utterly full-throttle behind this feature, even chiming, “AutoDrive is the future!”—assuming, of course, that the future involves running over some pedestrian randomly at full speed.
Then the reply chaos ensued as @LPNintendoITA went on a spree dunking on PlayStation fans (??), and @SolidNSnake1985 uploaded a clip of their vehicle just ejecting itself off a bridge (you have to love it), while @mycoolEth joked that AutoDrive is “like real life—you still gotta pay attention.” Not to mention, @BuhankaRzekycha just wants to know when CDPR’s fixing photo mode bugs on high-end GPUs. Priorities, folks.
And what about motorcycles? @Khurd214 asked if AutoDrive ever does anything for two wheels. The response? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ CDPR were as vague and nonspecific as expected, which is probably a very good thing considering the bike handling in this game.
Bottom line: Update 2.3 AutoDrive is a rad idea with some big Cyberpunk jank. It has some promising potential, but right now it’s about as reliable as a crashed Delamain limo after heavy synth-alcohol digestion. Let’s hope for a hotfix! The streets of Night City are dangerous enough without a rogue car.
Well, at least this is nowhere near as bad as that mission that has you tail a truck, trying not to bump into literally anything and fail right away (@sjfostersound feels that one deep). So, get the update, try AutoDrive at your own peril, and maybe keep a manual save handy. Just in case your ride decides that today is the day to go chaotic.
CDPR, we got our eyes on you. Mostly with laughs.
