A crazy year for any events has just been announced in Monster Hunter Wilds. Of course, it calls for everyone to grab their virtual spatulas and get into the flesh grills, at least in spirit. The new Event Quest “Putting up a Stink” lets hunters grab the iconic Cornpopper Gunlance with that almost parodic aesthetic while being pretty darn lethal! The quest also grants some very nice shades for those occasions when you want to strut around like you have been imported from a ’90s rom-com: Half Rim Glasses and Lovely Shades, usable by both Hunter and Alma.
Taking a moment to talk about the Cornpopper Gunlance. Imagine a gunlance shaped like a corn cob, with buttery-smacking explosions (well, that’s not butter by any technical means, but you get the idea). Players went crazier than ever, one tweet saying, “I don’t even play GL but you bet I got my corn on the cob.” Another Tweet said, “YEAHHH POPPOP MY BELOVED!!!!!” That’s how I felt too.
However, the occasion was not celebrated by every soul. Mixed answers of hype, demands, and… seemed to be complaints about performance? One person slammed Capcom outright, saying, “I would if MH Wilds was OPTIMIZED for PC! It’s a stuttering frame mess in the Grand Hub and everywhere!” Oof. Another one bluntly replied, “Make the game run better plz.” Then the rebuttal followed, “Game runs great,” and the whole argument broke loose in the replies. Classic Monster Hunter community: 50% love, 50% frustration, 100% passion.
Now, for fashion hunters. The new specs get major points, especially as it isn’t something just for your character. “I didn’t know I could give them to Alma!” one player said, albeit in joyful disbelief. Others, meanwhile, are just thinking about what wasn’t in the update. “Wish it was also Lance weapon…” sighed one downcast hunter. Shortly after, he took back the statement with the ardent collab beggars—several replies have been begging for a Hatsune Miku collab, one even counting down, “Day 30 of asking for a Hatsune Miku Collaboration.” Is that just devotion, or complete delusion? You decide.
The buff talk. One player shared some meta information: “The Corn Popper has a fun buff for overheating your gunlance. If you were to try mixing it with other ones, like the white flame buff, it might really land.” So yeah, it’s not just a meme weapon—it’s a meme weapon with potential.
In effect, the real question then comes down to when a collab starts? Between requests for Kimitsu, Pikmin (???), and Frontier monsters, the community wishlist is… quite eclectic. Then one guy went on to say, “Pikmin jakob is a groomer,” which had absolutely no bearing on the matter at hand. Unpredictable moments from Monster Hunter Twitter.
The event is a success all said. Silly weapon? Check. Fashion? Check. Community havoc? Double check. Just need Capcom sorting out those PC issues, and then we really will be cooking.
