The Destiny 2 promotion history, and the statistics ceased to do only that, actually supporting the fact that fewest people may ever have played the latest expansion to the game! And the reaction was — mayhem! Some of the players are defending it hard, as if their life depends on it; others are there silent while watching the other side install the game.
So what’s going on? The numbers say it all. Destiny 2 is practically shutting down. There can hardly be any exhaustion of the players from the latest expansion, Echoes of the Final Shape (EOF). The Steam player count view of the game was telling of a huge dip in interest while the internet is grimly divided into the lines of “It’s not that bad,” versus “Bungie, what did you DO?”
One user called @Kerch was describing the backlash as “salty and dramatic,” but let’s not even pretend here: when a game that used to attract hundreds of thousands of players suddenly falls flat breaking 50k, something’s really up. And it’s not just about numbers. Complaints are raining in from all sides. @JulioMOficial has gone so far as saying that the expansion should have been sold for $20, if not full price while giving their opinion on the lack of new supers, enemy types, and meaningful content! Ouch.
Then there’s the PvP set. @StylishDonut deleted it after many “why am I not doing damage?” moments. And @iTzSweetTooth? They never did buy EOF, not for the first time since Destiny 1. The reasoning? “Fun isn’t the goal anymore.” Double ouch.
Not everybody seems ready to step away just yet. @Aloaf_of_bread dropped a meme of someone happily playing Destiny 2 with the world burning around them, while @ImKolider insisted that 50k is “pretty good.” Sure, if you’re going to forget that past expansions ran way, WAY more than that.
Here’s the real kicker, though: Bungie pretty much seems to be on cooldown. While Destiny 2 does limping steps, the studio hard at work at Marathon, their extraction shooter. Some would say that’s a grave mistake after the first glances at Marathon were received with lukewarm enthusiasm (personally, I side with that).
That grim situation neglects the new-player experience as well. @Cloudz2021 wonders if anyone has actually fixed it because let’s be honest, Destiny 2 is still notorious for being unfriendly to newbies. @Kammtweets shared his experience with the improvements (mainly being impressed with the recent gear reset and simplified stats), but not everybody was convinced.
So, the bigger question is: Is there hope for Destiny 2 to be revived? Some argue that “Sony should put the game in better hands.” On the contrary, others say Destiny 3 would only make things worse. And Bungie’s silence, well, it’s no solace either.
One thing is certain: The Destiny community is more divided than ever. The massive drop in expansion player count should be a wake-up call, whether you’re still logging into daily or uninstalling out of sheer frustration. And if the devs don’t wake up soon, then Final Shape really may be a nail in the coffin.
So where do we stand now? More patching? Surprise content drop? Or just… the same old? Time will tell. Until then, though, Destiny 2 means uncertainty.
