The rumors say the world has condemned and, in fact, has canceled the long-procrastinated Final Fantasy 9 remake. The insider NateTheHate has alleged issues during development, though having nothing confirmed. There has been no announcements from Square Enix, and the conscious silence led the cover authors to concoct a few theories. And they certainly speculated.
The Twitter opinion set off a whole ton of reactions. Some gamers immediately put the blame on…Microsoft? Yeah, GamePass was blindly cast into the scavenger search for somebody to blame. A user chimed in and joked, “Ooop must be GamePass fault that’s the thing definitely destroying the industry and causes every single problem ever.” Another came back sarcastically, “Damn Microsoft,” as though Microsoft Xbox had anything to do with the internal struggles of Square Enix.
The blame game did not sit well with many. Some took the opportunity to point out the absurdity of this very rumor. “Why insiders can’t be taken seriously,” groaned one, with another mocking the ultra-harsh reaction: “Everybody at Square Enix should be sacked. Everybody that has ever had dealings with Square Enix should also be fired.”
Heartbroken FF fans entered the fold, mourning for the potential demise of the remake. “Would be sad if true,” sighed one. Another cried out, “Just do FF8 and my soul is yours,” which goes to show that no matter what Square does, somebody’s favorite is always left behind.
This was all it took to start the usual console wars. PlayStation zealots were screaming “PS is the king of gaming,” while PC supporters argued back with “PC is the master race.” Someone even dragged Kojima into this mess, claiming his walking simulator “has outsold everything,” so okay?
Calmer voices tried to cut through the madness with a few rational ideas. One suggested Square might’ve intended to slice and dice FF9 into a bunch of parts like FF7 Remake, which… honestly, kind of tracks. Others were just laughing at the whole thing, “Either we get the game or Square will be hated even more. Either way, it will be fun.”
So what really is going on? Nobody knows. Square hasn’t outrightly denied or confirmed anything while NateTheHate’s claims remain in the realm of rumor. But if gamers love one thing more than playing games, it’s jumping down the rabbit hole of unverified leaks.
For now, all we can do is wait—and maybe play through the original FF9 a few times for good measure. A remake or not, the classic isn’t going anywhere. And honestly… it’s not really such a bad scenario.
